We've got the Bean with us here this week, and he's "helping" a lot. The enthusiasm a four year-old has! He falls asleep each night happily anticipating the next day's work. Garden-work, kitchen-work - what some might call drudgery - this boy is all over. I know from experience that the helping phase passes about the same time the competence phase arrives, but I'm still enjoying it, especially on this short-term basis. Even the more so for all the helpees we have around here graciously accepting his offers (or demands: "I wanna help!") to work with them.
We managed to get some Seminole pumpkins, a few sunflowers, and a section of green beans planted before the last two days of rain began. Perfect timing! I usually plant the pumpkins in the late spring since they're one of the few plants that thrive in our summer heat, but ours did not do well this summer. So we'll try an experiment. They take 90 days to fruit - too late for Halloween, but possibly right on time for Thanksgiving.
And we have some extra pumpkin transplants if anyone local would like to try this. I saved the seeds from some actual pumpkin-shaped ones I got at the farmers market a couple years ago, and they are germinating at 100%! And, judging by the few that survived this summer, they're producing true to form. Let me know in the comment section if you would like a few. We'd be happy to "help" you out!
