How NOT to make compost

Local fauna

Eeek. What we are taught regarding nitrogen to carbon - "wet to dry" ratio in making compost is absolutely true. We have way, way too many vegetable scraps (nitrogen) for this little household compost maker. And the result was a compacted, garbage goo that apparently spelled "dessert" to cockroaches.

Don't look too closely

I've never had an enclosed composter before, just used a simple wire bin. We'd dump a little gallon size bucket of kitchen waste onto it, and just cover it with leaves to approximate the 3 to 1 ratio. Every month or two, we'd detach the wire and make a new bin next to the old one, forking the solids into the new bin (effectively stirring them) and raking the fine compost onto the garden.  No problems.

But now we live in the city with . . . rodents, and we need to keep the bin covered and contained. We are hoping this newer off-the-ground, crank-turned, double-compartment version will do the trick.
